ALLIANCE OF WORLD HERITAGE CULTURAL LANDSCAPES AND ASSOCIATED SITES

The Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror is a member of the Alliance of World Heritage Cultural Landscapes and Associated Sites, a cooperation network bringing together cultural landscapes inscribed on the World Heritage List and other territories with related heritage values.

The Alliance was established to connect territories that have evolved through a close and enduring interaction between human communities and their natural environment, and that are today committed to the protection, conservation, management and enhancement of this shared heritage.

What is the Alliance of World Heritage Cultural Landscapes?

The Alliance is an international cooperation initiative that brings together cultural landscapes inscribed on the World Heritage List, as well as associated sites sharing comparable characteristics and heritage attributes.

Its main objectives are:

  • To facilitate the exchange of knowledge, expertise and good practices in heritage management.
    • To promote cooperation in conservation, safeguarding and public awareness initiatives.
    • To encourage research and joint reflection on the long-term protection and sustainable management of cultural landscapes.
    • To strengthen the international visibility of these properties and their Outstanding Universal Value.

Members of the Alliance

The Alliance currently includes several World Heritage properties located primarily in the Iberian Peninsula:

  • Cultural Landscape of Aranjuez
    • Cultural Landscape of Sintra
    • Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture
    • Palmeral of Elche
    • Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín, Granada
    • Serra de Tramuntana Cultural Landscape
    • Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria Cultural Landscape
    • Tower of Hercules
    • Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror
    • Talayotic Menorca
    • Antequera Dolmens Site

In certain phases, the network has also been broadened to include associated institutions and related heritage sites. For example, the San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation (Monasteries of Suso and Yuso) has recently joined as part of the extended network in order to cooperate in research and heritage dissemination.

All these territories share the common responsibility of safeguarding living cultural landscapes, where nature and culture have co-evolved over centuries and where heritage values remain embedded in contemporary life.

The Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror within the Alliance

The Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror joined the Alliance in 2023.

Its active engagement is reflected in its participation in general assemblies and technical meetings, where it shares experience and expertise in heritage protection, conservation strategies, governance and site management with other members.

Membership in this network positions the property within an international framework of cooperation and contributes to the global reflection on the protection, conservation and sustainable management of cultural landscapes recognised for their Outstanding Universal Value.

Benefits of Membership

Membership in the Alliance provides several key benefits:

  • Cooperation and exchange of best practices with other World Heritage cultural landscapes.
    • Participation in joint forums, technical meetings and collaborative projects.
    • Increased international visibility of the property as a cultural landscape of Outstanding Universal Value.
    • Opportunities for cooperation in conservation, education, research and awareness-raising initiatives.

This membership reinforces the Valley’s commitment to the long-term protection, conservation and sustainable management of its cultural and natural heritage, and to collaborative action with other territories facing shared challenges in safeguarding World Heritage properties.
